I was in the back of an inter-state bus, on a journey that would take about 90 minutes. As is usual where I am, a passenger got up to preach and pray. Uncharacteristically for me, I decided to join the impromptu prayer session instead of popping in my headphones. Leading the prayer, was a middle-aged lady, wearing her native wrappers.
It went something like this: In Jesus’ name! Father, we thank you for giving us the chance to see another day… Lord, we are all sinners and we beg for your forgiveness… (Just then, a phone began to ring.) Father in Heave- Hello? Hello? Who is speaking? Oh, how are you…
I looked up in confusion. The prayer warrior had gone directly from leading a bus full of passengers in prayer, to chatting on her cell phone. No “excuse me”, nothing. At this point I was in shock. As I was staring at the woman, I caught the eye of a young man in the front seat, dressed in a business suit, who looked as astonished as I did. We looked at each other, and burst into laughter.
Eventually, the woman finished her phone call and jumped right back into the prayer. I looked at the man in the front and rolled my eyes like, “Yes, that just happened”. He shrugged. I popped my headphones in and put on some music.
I don’t think I’ll ever forget laughing in a bus, with a stranger.
What’s your story?
